Question of the Day

In an attempt to keep this blog interactive, I will periodically post a question. As I prefer to think of us as a support group of sorts, I ask that you post your answers publicly. Should you have some advice for another reader, please feel free to make that public as well. The more you guys respond, the more support you will receive...its a total win-win. So, thanks in advance for your participation! And happy weight loss!

Do you have a desired weight? If so, how many pounds to go, until you reach said weight?

  1. 150. I have 107.5 to go... but damn it, I will get there one day! :-)

  2. 230 is where I would like to be. I have 31 more to go. I started at 333 so after some ups and downs, I am not doing too bad this time. If I can keep the "off diet" moments to... plus or minus 10# ...I think I'll be ok. I've always done pretty well loosing weight but once it's off I return to the same diet that created my Santa Claus belly. This time I will work at paying closer attention to the upswings.

  3. Not so much weight but i'd just like to be a "large" vs. an "extra large". Should i have more lofty goals?

  4. Kim,
I think that's a lofty enough goal, but sometimes goals are more easily attaied when they are a little more concrete. One way to go about it, would be to set your goals in 3 month increments. Once you reach that goal, sat anonther.
Also, if you have an idea of the weight you'd like to be, theres a basic formula to calculate the amount of calories you should be consuming to reach that weight. Or, you can make use of the numerous online calorie calculators...super simple.
The two comments before yours were made by people who have been on this "journey" for a bit, and have ahd success. Jim, for example, has almost reached his goal of 100 lbs in one year (April 8th is his deadline). And Allison has been steadily losing weight while taking care of 3 kids, running a blog and 2 Etsy shops (so she's crafting while shes getting skinny). So...should you need some inspiration, look to these guys.
Again, thanks for being a part of this!!!

  5. Hannah, what's this formula you speak of? I'd love to know how many calories I should be consuming a day to hit my goal weight in a year. Do they take into account exercise?

    1. Kristy,
Have you tried keeping a food log? At the end of the week, you can look back and see what you've eaten and at what times. This could help you find the root of your problem.

  7. John,
Im so happy you're here! I hope you plan to stick around, so we can share in your personal journey (queer, I know), and help you reach your goals.

The formula I mentioned is very simple. Take the first 3 digits of your target weight, and add a zero. For example, I would llike to reach 138 lbs, so i should be consuming around 1380 net calories a day. Should I go to the gym and burn 300 cals, then my caloric intake, for that day, should be around 1680.

If you want something a little more precise, use an online calorie calculator like this one: http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm

If you are planning on counting calories, its pretty important to know how many calories are in whatever it is you're eating. This website is great for that: http://www.calorieking.com/

Again, Im really glad you've stopped by and I hope stay with us!

  8. For me , its not about a certain number on the scale. I want my clothes to fit properly, look extremely good naked, be healthy, and be somewhat muscular. I weigh currently about 120.5 lbs, but I know by gaining muscle that number will increase while my "size" changes.. So I am going by how I feel more so than a number.

    1. I think once you've lost a good amount of weight, as you have, you start going by the "feel", more so than the scale. Which is a great place to be, bc it means you can look in the mirror and actually want to add to your body (ie muscle), as opposed to stressing over what you want to remove (fat, cellulite etc).
